The role of liquid cooling for data centers

The core function of liquid cooling for data centers is to efficiently dissipate heat, significantly reduce energy consumption (PUE can be reduced to 1.05~1.15), support high-density computing power deployment, and improve equipment stability and noise reduction. It has become a key technology for green data centers in the AI era.
With the surge in demand for AI computing power, traditional air cooling is no longer able to meet the heat dissipation challenges of high-power chips. Liquid cooling uses liquid to directly or indirectly contact heating elements, with a thermal conductivity efficiency of 25-3000 times that of air. It can effectively solve hot spot problems and ensure stable operation of servers under high loads. Its main functions are reflected in the following five aspects:
1? Significantly improve heat dissipation efficiency
Liquid has a much higher specific heat capacity than air, and can quickly absorb and take away a large amount of heat, especially suitable for high-density scenarios where the power of a single cabinet exceeds 30kW or even exceeds 130kW.
Cold plate liquid cooling involves attaching the cold plate to core chips such as CPUs to achieve "precise cooling"; Immersion liquid cooling allows servers to be completely immersed in insulating coolant, achieving all-round heat dissipation.
2? Significantly reduce energy consumption and PUE
Liquid cooling can reduce or even eliminate air conditioning systems, saving about 30% of cooling energy consumption and reducing data center PUE (energy efficiency) from above 1.5 for air cooling to 1.05-1.15, with some advanced projects reaching below 1.08.
According to a 10 MW intelligent computing center, it can save about 30 million yuan in electricity bills annually.
3? Support high-density and miniaturized deployment
No need to reserve air ducts, equipment spacing can be greatly compressed, and under the same computing power, the computer room occupies only 30% of the air-cooled area, greatly improving space utilization.
It is particularly suitable for space constrained scenarios such as urban centers and edge computing.
4? Extend equipment lifespan and enhance reliability
Small temperature fluctuations, reducing thermal stress damage to electronic components, and reducing server failure rates by 20%.
Immersion liquid cooling can also isolate dust, moisture, and oxidation, further enhancing hardware durability, with some manufacturers testing a lifespan of over 10 years.
5? Realize waste heat recovery and silent operation
Liquid cooling systems use liquids as carriers to dissipate heat, which can be directly used for building heating or domestic hot water, creating additional economic value.
After canceling the high-speed fan, the noise is reduced by 20-35 decibels, achieving a "silent computer room".
